Griogair McAllein

“Is buaine focal no toic an t’saoghail.”
[“A word is more lasting than the world’s wealth.”]

I’m Griogair MacAllein, an award-winning storyteller, poet, folklorist and broadcaster based in Lochinver, Sutherland. With my grandmother being a traveller and music hall performer, I’ve followed in her footsteps in my deep sensitivity for “a’ the airts!” I graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Scottish Folklore and since then I have been involved in documentaries, written plays and stories that have gained national recognition, and told many, many stories…

A great inspiration to me, both visually and orally, is the wild and untamed Scottish landscape and natural world. Stories are recipes for education and entertainment and I have been fully immersed in the craft of oral storytelling with the help of the Scottish Travelling people in the North East of Scotland, particularly through the mentorship of Elizabeth Stewarts of the Stewarts of Fetterangus, Aberdeenshire. I have a deep love for all of my country’s traditions and will fight hard to keep them alive.
